Humbly Receiving God’s Word Leaves Us In a Pleasant State of Certainty

Among the many lessons that God repeatedly makes clear throughout the Bible is that he wants his people to have confidence and boldness in him and in his word. Having confidence and boldness in him makes us less susceptible to caving in to the many deceptions that fill our world today. People more often than not buy into deceptions because they allow harmful doubts to flood their minds, as Adam and Eve did in the Garden of Eden when they let the devil plant doubts about God’s word in their minds.

However, reaching the level of having that confidence and boldness requires that humility must happen first. That humility then opens the door to a wealth of other spiritual and real-life benefits we can experience. Proverbs 22:17-21 gives us a glimpse of some of those benefits:

17 Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge.

18 For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips.

19 That thy trust may be in the Lord, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee.

20 Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge,

21 That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?

People who have genuine hunger for genuine truth “bow down” or, as I stated above, humbly submit to the Lord to hear his words of wisdom in whatever form through whatever conduit he chooses to convey them. They also set their hearts on obtaining and using the godly knowledge he places in our path. It is then that they find God’s words of wisdom are a pleasant thing to their souls when they keep, or guard, those words in their heart.

As we continue our intent to keep them in our heart, it boosts our confidence and trust in the Lord. When we put God’s words of wisdom into practice, applying them to real-life situations, to try them out and to see if they really work, we will discover they are truly excellent things to counsel us and give us knowledge. The counsel and knowledge we get from him brings us to the point of knowing for sure the certainty and reliability of his truths. His counsel, knowledge, and truth when applied correctly can bring us more pleasant things not only in our heart and soul, but may also be displayed when we apply them to our finances, to our workplace conduct,  to our understanding of math, science, technology, or other academic pursuits, or to a whole host of other positive endeavors.

We’ll also find that we will answer people with the words of truth when they “send unto” us, seeking our advice on certain matters. Sharing God’s principles with them to address their concerns can even happen in ways we may not even notice since there are times we are walking so closely with the Lord that it’s almost like we’re on spiritual auto-pilot when God’s truths just automatically come out of us. Such scenarios are a reflection that the Lord truly does have something pleasant going on inside of us. And we should embrace it, feel encouraged by it, and never be ashamed of it no matter what the world says.
