True Christian Love Leads to Embracing Excellence

Spend a good amount of time in God’s word and you will find that the Christian love at the heart of our calling is an unceasing desire nudging us to experience it more deeply when we sincerely grow in our fellowship with the Lord. Isn’t this why the Spirit periodically reminds us to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength that then presses us to love our neighbor as ourselves? We always have plenty of room for Christ’s love to grow within us, and it grows as we link prayer with submission to God, according to what Paul teaches in Philippians.

When our focus is on expanding godly love within our heart and soul, there are an innumerable number of benefits that come about. The apostle Paul also touched on these benefits in Philippians. In Philippians 1, we find out how all of these concepts surrounding love tie in together to help us in our relationship with God to influence our conduct in the natural world. Paul states,

9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;

10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ.

11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

When we pray for love to abound in us and in our fellow believers and we all submit to God in the process, the abundance of his genuine love aids us in godly knowledge and judgment. Our understanding of God’s character, God’s doctrines, the ability to determine right versus wrong or good versus bad or what’s spiritually profitable versus what’s spiritual unprofitable will all be enhanced in us. Verses 10 and 11 then layout the ultimate ends for having such traits enhanced in us. The love that abounds in us to fuel knowledge and judgment causes us to then embrace ideas, actions, and practices that are excellent. For example, we see clearly the importance of shunning fornication in favor of keeping sex within God’s established form of marriage. Or we determine that it’s best to maintain a sober mind instead of losing control in an altered state of mind with alcohol and/or drugs that leave us open to be influenced by ungodly spirits.

Furthermore, love in tandem with knowledge and judgment aids the level of our genuineness in our relationship with Christ. We can even grow to the point where we are found without offense up to the day we stand before the judgment seat of Christ. Finally, it results in us being filled with the fruits of righteousness. The concept of the fruits of righteousness encompasses a vast array of things, from the fruit of the Spirit to spiritual gifts to the Lord Jesus rewarding us with some type of blessing in our circumstances (see Isaiah 3:10; 2 Corinthians 9:10-11). All in all, genuine love influences us to embrace excellent things so we can experience and distribute excellent things as we shun the things that detract and distract from what is excellent. It originates from the glory and praise of God so that it ends up to the glory and praise of God.
