Will Unbelievers Burn in Hell Forever?

Doug Batchelor of Amazing Facts ministries tackled questions about hell a couple of months ago in the 13 minute video below. In the video, Batchelor explains how he just couldn’t come to grips with the concept of how God could be loving and merciful yet allow for someone who rejects him, such as a 14-year-old boy, to burn eternally in hell in endless torture. So in order to restore his own faith in God, Batchelor came to believe that unbelievers are burned up, then they cease to exist. To him that’s the type of mercy he thinks God has or should have. Christians who teach otherwise are harming the faith, according to him.

Batchelor believes when the Bible talks about everlasting or eternal punishment, it means that the effects of being burned last forever, but unbelievers themselves are not burning in torment forever. He also believes hell right now isn’t inhabited. Is his understanding accurate? As you watch Batchelor’s video below, please use spiritual discernment and consider these scriptures:

23 And in hell he [the rich man] lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Luke 16 (Jesus implies that hell is inhabited now with people who are being tormented.)

11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name. Revelation 14 (If they are burned up into non-existence, the smoke would not ascend forever and ever. Unbelievers would still have to be existing and conscience if they were to experience not having rest day or night.)

10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. Revelation 20 (How could the beast and false prophet still be in the lake of fire if they’re burned up into non-existence? How can the devil, beast, and false prophet be tormented day and night forever if they’re burned up into the non-existence that Batchelor teaches?)
