Have you seen this catchy, humorous commercial about Apple’s iPad Pro?
Although the above TV ad from Apple reassures you the iPad Pro is immune to PC malware, the second volley of WikiLeaks Vault 7 documents shows there is something more insidious hidden in Apple’s various devices. According to WikiLeaks, the CIA has apparently found a way to infect Macs, iPhones, and iPads with their surveillance malware at the manufacturing stage of the devices. Since the malware is built in, any antivirus software will read the malware as just a normal, harmless part of Apple’s operating system.
In order for this CIA program, code-named “Project Dark Matter,” to be effective at the firmware level, at least one of two scenarios (maybe more) must be in play:
- The CIA has unfettered backdoor access to Apple’s programming at the research and development level at the initial stages, including at the sandbox level and/or Beta testing level.
- The CIA has agents who are employees of Apple doing the computer programming with or without Apple’s knowledge.
Another CIA program, “Sonic Screwdriver,” initiates a way for malware to work around any passwords Mac consumers use to protect their device when someone places a peripheral device, such as a USB flash drive, in a port as the Mac is booting up. The possibilities of how the CIA could use such malware is almost endless, from manipulating companies in publicly traded markets or those seeking to enter those markets, to setting someone up for a computer crime they didn’t commit, to exonerating a criminal who committed a computer crime, to monkeying with someone’s online banking and investment accounts, to blackmail/extortion, etc., etc.
The consequences of these capabilities will not help any society based on truth, justice, law and order. With these functions, how can the evidence presented by federal law enforcement agencies be considered reliable? It can ultimately do nothing but lower the respect and trust that law-abiding citizens should have in reliable, stable government. It also has the potential of harming the trust consumers are looking for in certain brands when they are shopping for new devices, which in turn can harm the markets and capitalism in general.
…they hunt every man his brother with a net. That they may do evil with both hands earnestly, the prince asketh, and the judge asketh for a reward [bribe, quid pro quo]; and the great man, he uttereth his mischievous desire: so they wrap it up. Micah 7:2-3
