When the stars align for God’s judgment

star-cluster-creative-commonsIn Biblical prophecies about the last days, the Lord uses celestial bodies prominently in his judgments. Whether it’s the sun, moon, stars, or other objects in space, they will be used by God to send a message. Why is that? We find in the scriptures that God often correlates his judgments to specific sins as follows:

10 Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely. Jeremiah 8

Now is the end come upon thee, and I will send mine anger upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense upon thee all thine abominations.

And mine eye shall not spare thee, neither will I have pity: but I will recompense thy ways upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and ye shall know that I am the Lord. Ezekiel 7

And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.

And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.

For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy. Revelation 16

In Jeremiah 8, the people of Judah had a habit of coveting and stealing what belonged to others, so God planned to have other nations come in and steal from them as punishment. In Revelation 16, the unbelievers on Earth during the tribulation will have their water turned to blood because they will take pleasure in the murders of God’s people. Ezekiel 7 reiterates that the judgments God carries out against people match the types of sin they embrace.

Taking these scenarios into account, I’m of the opinion that God will use celestial bodies to judge the Earth in the last days because that’s what people will be obsessed with. Whether their obsession is astrological, focusing on predicting the future based on the position of heavenly bodies, or if the obsession is evolutionary, finding life on other planets that were allegedly our ancestors, the Lord will judge people using the objects in space that are the focus of those obsessions.

Revelation 6:13 and 8:10-12 give us a glimpse of how God will judge people that practice sorcery (common in the last days (Revelation 9:21, 18:23)) by using the sun, moon, and stars to send them messages of their impending doom since they use those objects to encourage themselves in their sins. On the other hand, such signs in the heavens will be an encouragement to the saints that the Lord truly rewards the righteous and will not justify the unrepentant wicked.
