Generational curses tend to be a popular topic in Pentecostal/charismatic circles. It’s the idea that, based on Mosaic law, God will curse up to the third or fourth generation of descendants of people involved in ungodly things like paganism. I just read an article at the Charisma News website by Chester and Betsy Kylstra entitled, 4 Key Roadblocks to Healing and Deliverance that points out the following as a hindrance to Christians:
1. Sins of the fathers and resulting curses (SOFCs)
This problem area is rooted in the second commandment (Ex. 20:3–6), in which the sin of idolatry results in the curse of ”visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation” (KJ21). In order to get free of this curse, God provides a pattern of confession that we can follow, first mentioned in Lev. 26:40. We confess our ancestors’ sin as well as our own sin (1 John 1:9), forgive as needed (Matt. 6:14–15), appropriate Christ’s finished work on the cross to break curses (Gal. 3:13), and recover the ”legal ground” from the enemy (Col. 2:14).
Upon examination of the scriptures, we discover this is a non-issue for Christians, especially when one looks at Galatians 3:13 which, although they list in the above paragraph, the Kylstras seem not to notice that it debunks their whole notion that Christians can be plagued by generational curses. The context of Galatians 3:13 reads as follows:
10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident…
12 And the law is not of faith…
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles [pagans] through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Jesus Christ, by his sacrifice, has reversed any curse that came under the law at the moment an unbeliever repents of sin and believes in Jesus. The results of that salvation are backed up by what Paul also tells us in Romans 8:1-6. Here’s an excerpt:
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh…
Having “no condemnation” and being “made free” from the law of sin and death would include any and all curses that come with that law. If a Christian is facing hindrances to their goals, it is most likely due to their own unwise choices, opposition from devilish forces, or because their goal is something that is not within God’s will for them at that moment (see Acts 16:6-7). So points 2-4 that the Kylstras make in their article seem to be valid points. But generational curses don’t apply to the blood-bought Christian.

Hi: I have been trying to tell people for such a long time about generational curses and I am by no means an expert. At least three evangelists on TV have said recently that there are no generational curses today and have explained what that meant. People choose not to believe them. Yet again, they are not studying to show themselves approved. People are getting their Christianity from other Christians and not investigating themselves. People are doing all these crazy things and don’t know the Word – prophesying, dreams, visions. I wonder where they are coming from?????? Just a thought……

Perhaps I read your article wrongly and misunderstood your stance, but I believe that exorcisms and generational curses are real for Christian’s based on a lot of experiences that I can say are real. In addition, Scripturally, “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law” (v.13). From the curse of the Law. Generational curses? The law was a curse because it could not bring us righteousness. That is the context of this chapter (Galatians 3:12.13). The blessing of Abraham was righteousness by faith (v. 14).

People claim to be Christian who really aren’t Christian. Jesus gives us direct knowledge of how evil spirits operate:
43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.
44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.
45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. Matthew 12
True Christians aren’t empty, but are filled with the Holy Ghost. True Christians are also not part of the wicked generation. Therefore, when an evil spirit is cast out of a person, only those who truly receive Christ to have him dwell in them cannot be re-possessed by evil spirits.
Generational curses were part of the law as specifically stated in the quote in the post above & in Deuteronomy 28-29. Everything pertaining to the law and any offenses that were against us were wiped clean by Jesus’ blood. Period.
12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Colossians 2
When people get saved, the principalities and powers of Satan’s kingdom have been robbed by the Lord Jesus. Generational curses were part of the trespasses and ordinances against us, but Jesus’ blood wiped them out for good. Period.

I agree. A person is empty after the demon has gone out – if he returns to the same person he finds the man empty. What was the state of the man before the demon left and what made the demon enter that man to start with? Was he empty?

Read the scripture. Jesus said “Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.” In other words, he’s telling us this is the scenario of how it goes for the wicked generation. Wicked generation means without the Lord Jesus dwelling in them. The man who has unclean spirits is of the wicked generation. When Jesus cast out Legion, he didn’t go into every detail about the man’s history. He just asked him his name ultimately to show that he, Jesus, had power to cast out a man’s devils no matter how many and under what circumstances they possessed him. When Jesus cast out the devil from the boy after the disciples failed, he simply asked how long the boy had the devil and the man told him that as well as what the devil did to him (it made the boy suicidal). He didn’t ask the man every detail of his family history.
When Jesus healed the man at the Pool of Bethesda, he told him to sin no more, lest a worse thing happen to him. When a person has devils cast out and is told the full gospel about sin, repentance, and judgment, Jesus dwelling in them along with the Holy Ghost teaching them his word will give them all the understanding they need. It may be they will be shown in the process of drawing close to Jesus how the devilish situation happened and how to help others, but they themselves will never have to worry about possession again or generational curses. He that is in Christ is a new creature. Old things have passed away and ALL things are become new.
