Shall a campus divided stand?: creation vs evolution @ Bryan College

Bryan College, a Christian liberal arts college in Dayton, Tennessee, is embroiled in a heated battle over worldviews pitting a creationist president against professors who believe God created the universe using evolution. The college’s president, Dr. Stephen Livesay, released a clarification for the college’s statement of belief in February at the request of a large number of administrators and members of the governing board asking instructors to sign it. In that clarification was specific language declaring Adam and Eve as “historical persons created by God in a special formative act, and not from previously existing life-forms.”

Those who voted for this statement wanted to stave off the rising tide of anti-Christian values and beliefs in America by making it crystal clear where they stood. One of the staunchest critics of this move, natural sciences professor Stephen Barnett, says the administrators “just aren’t thinking” and that “the board was asking me to exclude, even as a possibility, any other way of understanding Genesis than their view of what they think the founders [of the college] probably thought.” So he and another professor, Steve DeGeorge, are suing the school over the change.

Additionally, the two professors and about two dozen of their colleagues gave Livesay a “no confidence” vote for the decision. Hundreds of students also signed a petition toward the end of the academic year to voice their opposition to the statement.

Livesay states that the new wording is in keeping with what the school has always practiced. Dr. Eisenback, a professor who left the college after his contract recently expired, believes there is room to “teach…students the same material they would hear at any state university” while “they [are] educated on the different ways that people read relevant Scripture passages.”

I personally hope Dr. Livesay and those who support the change will stick with their decision and will use it as an opportunity to teach young people bombarded with the fairy tale theory of evolution how to defend what the Bible says using scientific data that points out the failings of Darwinism. For more evidences of a young Earth, listen to Ken Ham’s “Ten Evidences of a Young Earth” from his Answers with Ken Ham broadcasts, vol. 113, episodes 28-37.

…keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: 1 Timothy 6:20

  1. Yes, and before you know it, Jesus (God in the flesh) would just be an “ordinary” man to skeptics/fools such as Barnett and others. You see, once evolution creeps into your line of thought and worldview, it’s not long before other truths in the Bible fall flat too. That, of course, would make Satan very happy. I can see him doing his somersaults already.
