It is a common thing to adopt practices as we go through life without stopping to question their validity or neglecting to see if God is really pleased with them. Reading one’s horoscope is such a practice. A large number of people who identify themselves as Christian think it’s completely harmless to go online or read the newspaper looking for what their horoscope says is in store for them. Some also have no problem with going to an astrologer or psychic to map out a chart for them based on the zodiac sign they were born under. But God makes it clear in the Bible he is against such practices.
Each astrological sign in the zodiac is associated with an evil spirit masquerading as an angel of light. These fallen angels may be called spirit guides or starships. Since they are “familiar spirits,” as the Bible calls them, they may be familiar with how a person thinks or acts or who their family members are (including their ancestors) so some of what they say may have a grain of truth in it, but ultimately their “readings” are intricate lies to turn a person away from the one true God. Here’s what God says about worshiping the celestial bodies and observing astrology:
If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,
2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
4 Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.
5 And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the Lord your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the Lord thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee. Deuteronomy 13
10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.
11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee. Deuteronomy 18
19 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?
20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8
The scriptures show us that astrology, or divination, is associated with witchcraft, or sorcery. In the New Testament, it is further revealed that those who involve themselves in such practices shall not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21; Revelation 21:8). When the Jewish leaders went up to Jesus to demand that he show them a sign in the heavens, he replied, “A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas,” Matthew 16:4. So those seeking signs in the zodiac are looking in the wrong place and including themselves with the wrong generation. If a person really wants to know what their future holds, they should start with God’s true sign as symbolically shown by the prophet Jonah’s real experience. Jonah’s real experience in the belly of the whale was a type of the only sign we need to embrace–Jesus died, was buried three days, and was raised from the dead never to die again.
Starting with that simple, godly sign serves as the foundation for any other sign God shows us through his prophecies for us personally or as a whole church since the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy (Revelation 19:10).
