Swords into plowshares?: why the UN arms trade treaty will ultimately fail

The United Nations has a sculpture in its garden of a male ironworker with a sledgehammer pounding a sword with the inscription “We shall beat our swords into plowshares.” That mantra has been one of the UN’s favorites and one of its main goals since it started. We are now witnessing their attempt to make a giant leap forward in this endeavor with their global arms trade treaty talks being carried out right now.  A few weeks ago, political analyst Dick Morris warned on YouTube that the Obama Administration planned to sign the UN treaty on July 27, 2012, while everyone is preoccupied with gearing up for the Olympics, which would affect Second Amendment rights.

War and violence are hated by most of us on the planet. But the UN and other NWO organizations pushing for world peace really have sinister ulterior motives for the move to diminish and ultimately do away with weapons. My opinion is that they only want people armed who will enforce the NWO and who will help them maintain power over the masses. But here’s what we learn from the Bible about efforts to curb access to weapons:

Oppressors disarm populations to tightly control their subjects. 1 Samuel 13:19, 22 says “Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears: …So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.” The Philistines oppressed and controlled the Hebrews by disarming them. They had to go to the Philistines to maintain the tools they used. Throughout history this scenario has been repeated and was one of the grievances American colonists had with the British government, who had strict controls over their arms.

Jesus predicted violence & wars would be common in the last days. In Matthew 24, Jesus said “as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” According to Genesis 6, the days of Noah were “filled with violence” and other atrocities. Jesus also said in Matthew 24 that there would be wars and rumors of wars with nation rising against nation and kingdom against kingdom in the last days of the world. Revelation 9:21 says that when the Lord sends plagues on the Earth to punish unbelievers, they will not repent of their murders. Thus far all of his predictions have come true, so we can trust that arms trade treaties will be ignored with all the killing that will still go on as he prophesied.

One world government and the Antichrist will be established by wars. Human nature is such that people tend to be greedy, covetous, envious, jealous, and lustful when they don’t know Jesus. Since that’s most of the world, we should not be surprised that people rise up who want to rule the world and that they make enemies in the process. In Daniel 8:23-25, we are told a fierce king from the one world government will rise up to “destroy wonderfully” his opponents and “by peace shall destroy many.” Daniel 11:21-45 goes into detail about how he will do this. He will war against his opponents, establish a peace treaty, violate the peace treaty, and conquer the world by war and diplomacy. Revelation 13 predicts this king, the Antichrist, will be mortally wounded but will rise from his deadly wound. Then the majority of the people of the world will be amazed and wonder “who is able to make war with him?” This will be followed by him warring against the tribulation saints.

I am all for peace. Although arms treaties fail because of man’s sinful nature, I believe people and nations should work to be peaceable with each other. But when such treaties come at the expense of violating one’s right to defend oneself against genuine oppression, then the treaty tends to be disingenuous. And I use the term “genuine oppression” to make the distinction from the group of people who are taught that if someone does not believe what you believe and says it openly, then they are oppressing you and you have the right to kill them.

The UN’s desire to beat swords into plowshares will never be genuine since the “swords into plowshares” promise was a prophecy made by Isaiah about our Messiah Jesus Christ and only Jesus has the power to carry it out. If we just look at how North Korea and Iran behave or at how Russia and China blocked any actions against Syria for their civil war in the UN Security Council, we can see what will become of enforcement of the Arms Trade Treaty. But I also believe what Paul said in Romans 12, “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”
