Muslim cleric arrested by U.S. border officers

A Muslim cleric who was deported from Montreal, Canada to Tunisia in 2007 was discovered trying to sneak into the U.S. from Mexico earlier this month.  Said Jaziri was ordered deported by a Canadian court in 2007 after it was discovered he hid a criminal conviction from Canadian authorities so he could get into Canada under refugee status.

An investigation into his past by the Canadians revealed that Jaziri physically assaulted a man in France and was convicted of the assault in 1994.  Jaziri attacked the man after the man successfully and legally took actions that resulted in the closing of a Muslim prayer room in France.

His Montreal mosque followers unsuccessfully fought his deportation by claiming he would be tortured if he returned to Tunisia.  An advocate for Shariah law while he was in Canada, Jaziri apparently took advantage of the unrest that has recently taken place in Tunisia as his opportunity to leave the country, fly to Chetumal, Mexico (near Belize), take a bus to Tijuana, Mexico, and pay a smuggler $5,000 to get him into the U.S. in the trunk of a BMW.

U.S. border authorities arrested him near San Diego, CA.  He is now a material witness in a case against two human smugglers.
