The unscientific anti-Christianity

Christian Science, or the Church of Christ, Scientist, was founded by Mary Baker Eddy who was born in 1821.  Most of her early life was spent battling illnesses and disease until she met her mentor Phineas Parkhurst Quimby in 1862.  He taught metaphysical healing known as New Thought which was the belief that one can concentrate the power of the mind to heal all sickness and disease.  Eddy made claims that Quimby’s teachings helped her get well.

Quimby died in 1866 and several weeks afterward, Mary Baker Eddy had a bad fall on a sidewalk in Lynn, Massachusetts, hitting her back on some ice that was on the ground.  A medical team worked hard to revive her, but she awoke to find herself crippled.  After she regained consciousness, she asked for a Bible and was healed after reading the Biblical account of Christ healing the man sick of the palsy in Matthew 9:1-8.  She attributed her healing to God’s power working on her human mind to bring about awakened thought.  It was her opinion that this power was based on scientific principles.  The Church of Christ, Scientist was founded with her taking the lead in 1879 in Boston.  In 1892, the church was formed into a worldwide organization known as the First Church of Christ, Scientist with the church in Boston serving as the headquarters.

Here are some of the basic beliefs of this religious organization based on Eddy’s teachings in contrast to the truths we find in God’s word:

  • Christian Science teaches that Mrs. Eddy’s book Science and Health must be taught alongside the Bible to acquire the true scientific knowledge of being healed and knowing the truth.
  • Jesus Christ, quoting Isaiah in Matthew 15:9, spoke against teaching the worship of God through the doctrines of men.  The Bible also condemns adding to what God has already ordered to be written in his word.
  • Christian Science teaches that sin is forgiven by God when an individual realizes through God that sin is not real. Science and Health, p. 497
  • The Bible states that sin is real and “[i]f we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, he [God] is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” 1 John 1:8-10
  • Christian Science says that once you no longer believe in the reality of sin, you will no longer be punished for your sins.  Science and Health, p. 497
  • It says in Proverbs 28:13 “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”
  • Christian Science promotes the idea that healing is a natural scientific principle established by God which only has to be accepted mentally by the person who needs to be healed and it is not a miraculous occurrence.
  • Acts 4:22 states that the lame man who was healed in Acts 3 had received a “miracle of healing” and 1 Corinthians 12:28 lists “miracles” as a gift of the Holy Spirit.
  • Christian Science denies the Trinity on p. 256 of Science and Health–“The theory of three persons in one God (that is, a personal Trinity or Tri-unity) suggests polytheism, rather than the one ever-present I AM.”
  • The Bible says that the Lord our God is one God who manifests himself in three persons–“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” 1 John 5:7
  • Christian Science denies that Jesus Christ was God who was made flesh in Science and Health, p. 256–“The everlasting I AM is not bounded nor compressed within the narrow limits of physical humanity, nor can He be understood aright through mortal concepts.”
  • According to the Bible “…the Word [God] was made flesh, and dwelt among us…” John 1:14.  Additionally, “[h]ereby know ye the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: and every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.” 1 John 4:2-4
  • Christian Science teaches that God is a Principle, not a spiritual person who you can have a relationship with–“The Father, Son and Holy Ghost are one in essence and in office. The Father, the divine Principle of being, the Son, the spiritual idea of this Principle, and the Holy Ghost, is Christian Science” The Milennium, an essay by Mary Baker Eddy.
  • Jesus said, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth,” John 4:24.  Throughout the Bible, we see that God knows people personally, sometimes speaks to them in an audible voice, and has a whole range of emotions.
  • According to Christian Science, heaven and hell are not actual places but are states of mind that a person lives with. Science and Health, pp. 291, 588
  • The Bible says heaven and hell are actual places.  Heaven is up and where God sits on his throne, overseeing the universe, and where his angels and saints reside.  Hell is down and is the place where rebellious angels are chained (2 Peter 2:4) and where those who reject Christ are kept until judgment day.

In conclusion, it is clear that based on their beliefs, Christian Science is neither Christian nor is it science.
