CW’s “Reaper”–serving Satan is chic and cool

This fall’s television lineup on the CW includes a new show, Reaper, that will make light of Satan and what he does.  The premise of the show is that two parents in suburbia sell the soul of their son to the devil.  When the devil comes calling to collect on what he is owed, he puts the young man to work rounding up evil souls that have escaped from hell, using special weapons and powers that are given to him from Satan.

And so the vast wasteland of television continues its downward spiral.  From the previews I’ve seen, the concept is rather unoriginal and seems to take some of its ideas from comics such as Ghost Rider or Hellboy.  It’s too bad that Hollywood continues to lack originality and it’s even worse that Satanism is made to look so inviting and hip.  According to the Bible, Satan is a spiritual robber who comes to steal, kill, and destroy anything that remotely resembles God, especially humans–all of whom are created in God’s image.  He is also called the father of lies, a deceiver, the one who seeks people to devour, the accuser of the brethren, and worse titles.  In short, he is a spiritual being that should be avoided and not one who is to be welcomed or that we should associate with.

But you wouldn’t know that from the previews of Reaper.  It does nothing but promote misconceptions about Satan, death, and hell.  For instance, no one can escape from hell according to Jesus’ parable about the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31).  No one in hell has any supernatural powers to fight anyone who is against them either, as portrayed in the show.   This show, just like so many movies and shows before it, is nothing more than a slick tool to recruit young or naive minds into the service of Satan.  As the coming of Antichrist approaches, Satan is inspiring those involved in the media to lay a foundation in the minds of the people that will open them up to receive and worship him and his protegé, the Antichrist.  He continues to deceive people into thinking that his works like witchcraft, ESP, psychic powers, drug and alcohol abuse, and other evils are where true power can be found.  But ultimately he and his followers will find out how powerless they truly are when they have to face the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the only one with all power.

  1. Personally, I find their version of a mythological hell more interesting than the Bible’s. It amazes me that seemingly intelligent people believe in the Antichrist, Satan influencing our actions and all the rest.

  2. So according to you watching This Show is the same as worshipping Satan. You underscore by your own comments how much more intresting the Devil is in contrast to anything on the side of the “light” dont you? With the charachter of Satan you can use all human characteristics failings and temptation to show our human nature..do the same with the Lord Jesus Christ and what do u get? Only one thing according to the Bible and that is preach preach preach. How intresting would it be to make a show about preaching. You may want to consider joining the Jehovahs Witnesses.

  3. No, I never said watching the show is the same as worshipping Satan. What I did say is that the show makes serving Satan look inviting and hip. Ask any ex-Satanist who’s been saved and they’ll tell you what a relief it is to no longer be a Satanist. They’ll probably also tell you about all the garbage they endured when in his service.

    It’s not necessary to use misconceptions about Satan to highlight our human weaknesses. We’ve been doing that so well on our own throughout the centuries. Furthermore, a show using a characterization of Jesus Christ would definitely be much more interesting because it would highlight how much we don’t want to listen to him with the negative consequences that would result in everyday life situations. Then it would show that in spite of his disappointment with us making our bad decisions, he would still be willing to reach out to us time and time again. That would make for excellent drama as opposed to the worthless unrealistic mind candy of Reaper.

    Now that I think about it, there were two shows that came very close to this premise although they didn’t use a personification of Jesus, they used characters who served God. “Touched By An Angel” and “Seventh Heaven” and they were huge hits while they were on TV.

    As far as Jehovah’s Witnesses are concerned, it’s a false religion and all false religions originate with satanically-influenced people.

  4. Oh my goodness! You never said watching the show is akin to worshipping Satan however its really a distinction without a difference since the theme of your discussion is “CW Reaper Serving Satan is chic and cool.” Be that as it may you also say “It’s not necessary to use misconceptions about Satan to highlight our human weaknesses.”….Are you serious. Who are you to say categorically its not good to use misconceptions about Satan to highlight anything? Necessary or not is not for u to decide. In fact it is Wrong! The so called Christian church has found it Necessary to use for example the induction of a pagan day namely December 25 th and APPLY it to the birth of YOUR LORD JESUS to show how nice and Christian you can be yet that doesnt stop you from celebrating it Hypocritically does it? Mischaracterizing a pagan day and turning it into a festival for Jesus is ok with you , doesnt bother you and in fact is promoted one of the most important days of the year. But some hollywood director cant misaply any charachteristic of Evil for a show? I would be intrested to know how to tell when someone is Satanically influenced. Tell me because I would be intrested to know your definition of being influenced by an evil spirit creature. Humans have been having to protect themselves from each other for a long long time. Perhaps it is humans u are refering to when u say Satanically influenced.

  5. I used the terms “chic” and “cool” in the title to be sarcastic and at the same time highlight the mentality of some people in Hollywood. But anyone reading my post who has deductive reasoning skills could figure that out.

    [Who are you to say categorically its not good to use misconceptions about Satan to highlight anything? Necessary or not is not for u to decide.] I was expressing an opinion based on the truth that’s in the Bible, just like you’re expressing your opinion based on your hatred for God and Christians. If you think it’s not for me to decide, then who are you to make the decision that it’s not for me to decide? If you are free to express the opinion that you see nothing wrong with Reaper, then I’m free to express my opinion about how deceptive and evil it is.

    You’re right regarding your statement about the pagan holidays which have been Christianized. Neither Jesus nor his disciples in the Bible ever suggested we celebrate his birthday every year. As a matter of fact, Jesus was born in the spring, not in the winter. That’s why I’m a Christian who doesn’t celebrate Christmas although it was a tradition in my family when I was growing up.

    By satanically influenced, I mean that Satan has always tried to imitate God or to get people to turn away from God using all types of methods. Satan masquerades as an angel of light, according to the scriptures. He makes himself look non-threatening and innocent and those who knowingly or unknowingly follow him do the same thing. Mohammed, Joseph Smith, and several other people who started false religions have claimed that they had visions from God, but their teachings are contrary to God’s truth, which is characteristic of what Satan does.

    But this conversation brought on by Reaper may be moot since it probably won’t stay on the air for as long as Touched By An Angel and Seventh Heaven did.

  6. I wondered is it safe to watch Reaper, the television show. Although I find it sad that the main character is working for the Devil, it seems that the show is similar to Ghostbusters. Do you think that there is a way to make it non-Satanic?

  7. Well, since the premise of the show is a young man whose parents sell his soul to the Devil and he has to do the Devil’s bidding, the show probably couldn’t be made non-Satanic unless the main character were to discover, like “Ghost Rider”, that he doesn’t have to do what the Devil says.

  8. There are a few verses in the Bible that I live by that shows what it is to be a Christian:

    Mathew 22 according to http://www.carm.org ( King James Version)
    37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

    38 This is the first and great commandment.

    39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

    =

    Love is explained in 1 Cortinthians (charity used for love):
    4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

    5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

    6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

    7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

    8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

    =

    The fruit of the Holy Spirit is described in Galatians 5 :
    22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

    23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

    The armour of Christ is described in Ephesians 6:
    Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

    12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

    13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

    14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

    15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

    16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

    17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

    The truth of the matter is that we need not fear this evil we call Satan. This series makes light of the only part of a human that lives forever. With each episode the idea is forced deeper into the psyche of the world that it it possible to sell your soul to this dark entity. If you watch this evil show, part of your soul is already gone. May you experience enough love and wisdom to discontinue watching this evil.

  9. Get over yourselves and turn the channel. No one is forcing you to watch this show. How would you like it if I protested in front of your church every Sunday because I didn’t agree with your beliefs? Live and let live. That’s what Jesus would have done. Too bad his brand of Christianity has been dead for centuries leaving only hypocritical hatred like the bile trickling down the side of your rabid mouth.

  10. Thaddeus,

    Sharing an opinion over the internet about a TV show is totally different than standing in front of a church to protest their beliefs. The only thing the two situations would have in common is freedom of speech. No one reading and discussing this post is protesting in front of the CBS and Time Warner studios about this CW show.

    If you were so concerned about “live and let live”, then why even bother leaving your negative comment? Maybe you should take your own advice because if that were the motto you believe in, you would have read this post and then moved on to doing something else without your comment.

    If you knew anything about the Jesus Christ in the Bible, you would know he didn’t “live and let live.” He came to confront people about their wrong beliefs, wrongdoings in their lives and toward others, and highlighted their misconceptions about God and he did it all with bold love. That’s why he was hated and was crucified. He even told his brothers who mocked him, “The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.” [John 7:7]

    As Jesus testified against the evils that were done in his day, I’m doing the same thing in speaking out against this evil TV show. So, you see, Jesus’ brand of Christianity is still alive and well and thriving.
