The bad “-isms” of Buddhism

Siddhartha Gautama started Buddhism in the 6th century B.C. in India as a protest against Hinduism’s Brahman priests who abused their power over the people.  Buddhism has so many sects whose beliefs are all over the map, but here are some of their most basic teachings in contrast to God’s truth:

  • Buddhism teaches that man can exercise his own mental discipline to overcome suffering in the world and bring about his own spiritual advancement. (Buddha The Gospel, “The Annihilation of Suffering” chapter–“And what, O brethren, is the path that leads to the annihilation of suffering? It is the holy eightfold path that leads to the annihilation of suffering, which consists of right views, right decision, right speech, right action, right living, right struggling, right thoughts, and right meditation. In so far, O friends, as a noble youth thus recognizes suffering and the origin of suffering, as he recognizes the annihilation of suffering, and walks on the path that leads to the annihilation of suffering, radically forsaking passion, subduing wrath, annihilating the vain conceit of the I-am, leaving ignorance, and attaining to enlightenment, he will make an end of all suffering even in this life.”)
  • God’s word teaches that man overcomes suffering only through Christ, for Jesus said, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation [troubles, suffering]: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” [John 16:33].  The Bible also says “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” [1 John 5:4-5] and that man’s spirit is dead without Jesus (Ephesians 2:1; Colossians 2:13).
  • Buddhist teachings praise Siddhartha Gautama as higher than all men and all gods. (Buddha The Gospel, “Words of Instruction” chapter– “Adoration be to thee, O noble sage, adoration be to thee, O thou best of beings; in the world of men and gods there is none equal to thee. Thou art the Buddha, thou art the Master, thou art the muni that conquers Mara; after having cut off desire thou hast crossed over and carriest this generation to the other shore.”)
  • The Bible says Jehovah is the supreme God– “For thus saith the LORD [Jehovah] that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD [Jehovah]; and there is none else. …Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.  I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. [Isaiah 45:18, 22-23].
  • Buddhism says people exist in an endless cycle of rebirths (reincarnation) that are determined by karma. (Buddha The Gospel, “Name and Form” chapter– “Therefore, O bhikkhus, as there is no self, there is no transmigration of a self; but there are deeds and the continued effect of deeds. There is a rebirth of karma; there is reincarnation. This rebirth, this reincarnation, this reappearance of the conformations is continuous and depends on the law of cause and effect. Just as a seal is impressed upon the wax reproducing the configurations of its device, so the thoughts of men, their characters, their aspirations are impressed upon others in continuous transference and continue their karma, and good deeds will continue in blessings while bad deeds will continue in curses.”)
  • The Bible says “…it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment,” [Hebrews 9:27] and “we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad,” [2 Corinthians 5:10].  Our acceptance or rejection of Christ determines our eternal state (John 3:36).
  • Buddhism teaches that man needs salvation from this endless cycle of rebirths and this salvation (nirvana) only comes by fulfilling an “Eightfold Path.” (Buddha The Gospel, “Enlightenment” chapter– “The Enlightened One saw the four noble truths which point out the path that leads to Nirvana or the extinction of self: The first noble truth is the existence of sorrow. The second noble truth is the cause of suffering. The third noble truth is the cessation of sorrow. The fourth noble truth is the eightfold path that leads to the cessation of sorrow.)
  • God’s word says man is in need of salvation from his sins and this salvation can only come by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.  Our works cannot save us, “For by grace are ye saved through faith [in Jesus Christ]; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast,”  [Ephesians 2:8-9].
  • They teach that when an individual obtains nirvana, they are like a god. (Buddha The Gospel, “The Widow’s Mite and the Three Merchants” chapter– “Those who through the exercise of various virtues become pious householders will be born again [reincarnated] as men, for all beings will reap the fruit of their actions. But he who increases his wealth is like unto one who practices eminent virtues. The virtuous, excellent man attains in heaven to the glorious state of the gods.”)
  • The Bible says man will never be a god and the desire to be like a god comes from Satan when he said to Eve “…Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil,” [Genesis 3:5].

“[L]et God be true, but every man a liar.” (Romans 3:4)

  1. Some of what you post about Buddhism is seen incorrectly through a Christian bias, and so Buddhism comes out badly in your comparison.

    First argument:

Buddhism teaches that self and ego is an self-affirming illusion that must be overcome so as to overcome dukkha.

    Second argument:

Buddhism teaches that there is no first cause. Don’t mistake this for a dis-belief in gods. Yes it argues that there is no single beginning moment or cause., but it does not follow that there is no God.

    Third argument:

As self, ego and personality is an illusion, there is no ‘person’ or personality to be reborn. What is incarnated is the habit energy of your karma.

    Fourth argument:

No one needs salvation from anything. The practice is to get out of the way of being.

    Fifth:

If there is no God, how can one possibly become God by reaching Nirvana?

  2. Doug,

I did begin my post by saying Buddhism has many sects who believe different things. I also stated Buddhists don’t believe there is one supreme God; in other words they believe there are gods (more than one) and one god is not the ruler over the others. Yes, I do have a Christian bias which is why I didn’t state Buddhist beliefs in their language.

If Buddhism comes out badly in my view, it’s because Buddhist teachings are contrary to what the only true and living God, Yahweh, says in his word and that makes Buddhist teachings lies. One day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is the only Lord. The practices and beliefs of any other philosophy and/or religion that did not originate with God will be proven to be worthless. Man is basically evil and the only one who can deliver us from our evil (which, by the way, is what causes our suffering) is Jesus Christ, who loved us enough to die for our sins and who rose from the dead to live forevermore at the right hand of God the Father in heaven.

As to the many gods/one god thing. You might take some time to explore the ‘cosmology’ of the realms of Desire and Form. It is a bit esoteric, but in my understanding does not preclude one God ruling over the others ‘gods’ and completely accepts that God rules over this world.

  4. Doug,

“Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?” (James 2:19-20).

What faith? What works? “Then said they [the Israelites] unto him [Jesus Christ], What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. … For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. … And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:28-29, 38, 40).

Additionally, “Jesus saith unto him [Thomas his disciple], I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6).

“Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.” (Jeremiah 9:23-24).

So, Doug, this is the only way man can truly understand himself and his place in the universe.

    1. Nobody should say bad about another religion. Whether you are a Christian, Buddhist, Hindu etc. Aa far as I know, anyone who condemn another religion is not a true believer of his or her own religion. Unless, his or her religion teaches one to fight against another for just 1 word ie GOD. We have seen wars started because of different beliefs. Humans get killed because of religion. So, keep your beliefs to yourself and stop hurting others because of what you think or belief. Do you think GOD encourage humans to kill one another because of different in opinions and belief?

  5. Call me crazy, but I believe many of the other religions of the world worship fallen angels who make themselves out to be ‘gods’. Sorry, I don’t have any scripture to back this up… just a gut feeling. But it can be plausible. Supposidly “Gabriel” told Mohammad the book of the Koran. However, this was obviously a fallen angel taking on the appearance of an angel of light (Satan uses this tactic a lot. It’s best to try any spirit that speaks to you in a vision, dream, or in reality, and see if they are actually from God. If it’s something that contradicts the Word of God, it’s false). Also, the so called “angel” that lead Joseph Smith to finding the book of morman. Obviously, this angel was a fallen angel. Thanks to these deceptive demons, many of today’s religions were started to combat God and his Word.

Of course, there are those religions that are man-made, but not influenced by any evil spirits (No visions, dreams, etc). In this case, it’s simply the carnal mind that created the religion to combat God and his Word. Though.. if the religion’s purpose is to lead people astray from Jesus… then it could be influenced by the Anti-christ spirit… hmm.

Well, God bless you guys! I pray for those who are in other religions, that they someday see the Light, Jesus Christ, and accept Him into their heart. All things are possible with God.

  6. It doesnt matter what you believe in. If you believe in a rock and it works for you then believe in it. Buddism is a way to give peace for the soul and so does Christianity and every other religion. So to say that this religion or ism is right and that one is wrong is up to you. Trust and believe in what makes you feel good in yourself.

  7. [It doesnt matter what you believe in]

Maybe it doesn’t matter to you, Tony, but it does matter to God. The Bible states clearly that “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” [John 3:36]

If one does not believe in Jesus Christ, God’s wrath abides on that individual. Jesus is THE way, THE truth, and THE life, meaning there is no other way to God or salvation from sin, no other spiritual truth other than the truth that one must accept Christ to be saved from sin, and no other eternal life apart from the eternal life that can be obtained by faith in Jesus Christ.

[Trust and believe in what makes you feel good in yourself]

This is a spiritually bankrupt philosophy. So what you’re saying is that if it makes me feel good in myself to lie, or to offer up human sacrifices, or to drink animals’ blood because it feels good to me, I should do it. That’s complete nonsense and it’s anti-Christ.

Buddhism is a religion that cries “Peace, peace!” when there is no peace. It only provides a cheap imitation of true peace and true peace can only be found in the Prince of peace–Jesus Christ.

secondly u r looking at each thing from the book of bible try looking the same thing from other scripture and u may have diff point of view (i know u wont as u r point struck at one thing)

being impartially i sud say their is lot of lots of similarity between the teaching of christinity and buddhism (if u cater to read both)

if u r fundamentalist dude no matter what religion u belong ( u then may have osama bin laden as ur counter part who think any one who is ‘non-islamist ” is “anti -allah” and sud be brought to death anyhow)

even in bible it is written that the god and his teaching will come to you in diff forms such tht u wont recognize them but the one with pure heart will follow the path

consider a good christian and a good buddhist what diff u find very less …just the name of buddha and christ (both want peace not a holy war)
look at the similaritty not with a eye of a fundamentalist but an impartial human being striving towards humanity

and yes no spiritual philosphy goes ever bankrupt it’s the human who fall bankrupt economically and manytimes mentally

Read bible well u will find then teaching of buddha in it!

  9. [their sud be respect for all religion]

That’s your opinion. As a Christian, I should respect everyone’s right to choose whatever religion they choose to follow, but I am not required to respect any religion that doesn’t line up with the truths taught in the Bible.

The example I have of this in the Bible is in Acts 17 when the apostle Paul visited Athens, Greece. Paul’s “spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.” They had different religions worshiping other gods. Paul criticized them by saying, “men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.” I.e., he expressed they were too caught up in false religion.

Then he pointed them to the true God by stating, “Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent…”

The true God is not shaped by man’s device, which includes men creating a set of doctrines based on what they think God should look like and on how they believe he should act. This is what Buddhism and all false religion does–create a god in man’s image. Then Paul told them they should repent of their false religion. He wasn’t concerned about respecting their religion, but recognized they had the right to choose their religion. He then gave them reasons why they should repent, or turn from their wicked idolatry, by telling God’s impending judgment on sins like idolatry was inevitable.

[the supreme purpose of all religion is to make human]

That is true of all false religion, like Buddhism. But Christianity’s purpose is to save humans from their sinful human nature so as to establish a relationship with God to do God’s will for eternity and escape his ultimate judgment against all evil when he destroys all his enemies–whether they are spirit or human.

[being impartially i sud say their is lot of lots of similarity between the teaching of christinity and buddhism]

You claim to be impartial, but you’re not. There is not partiality in this world as to whose side people are on. You’re either on God’s side or the devil’s, for our Lord Jesus Christ said, “He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.” [Luke 11:23] They “scatter” by following doctrines that come from every direction except God’s direction. No neutrality exists when it comes to spirituality and religion.

There may appear to be some similarities between Buddhism and Christianity, but this is only because Satan always conjures up doctrines because “Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” [2 Corinthians 11:13-14]

Satan appears as an innocent angel to do nothing but deceive people into thinking they are on the right path when they follow the doctrines of his agents, with Buddha being one of his many agents, when those people are really on the wrong path.

[Read bible well u will find then teaching of buddha in it!]

No I won’t. I have read the Bible several times over and Buddha’s teachings are contrary to God’s truths. You tell me to read the Bible well, but it’s obvious you haven’t read it yourself because it would be clear to you Buddha’s teachings don’t even come close.

And don’t tell me there are too many or anything about different versions, or the ideology is too general. It took enough people and time to write all of the Judao Christian texts. Find anything with a guy wearing a robe.
WHy are you only talking about the getting salvation part? what about your time on earth? Buddha taught people how to be happy and mindful of others. Maybe the kindness the Buddha uses might give someone the strength to find Christ or at least be happy. You are forgetting that believing in CHrist isn’t enough to go to heaven.

    1. [You provided links for all of your bible references, but what about your statements on buddhism? There are plenty of texts to look in.]

That’s a good point. I’ll look them up and update this post with where Buddhism states the false doctrines I highlighted.

[WHy are you only talking about the getting salvation part? what about your time on earth?]

Because salvation is the solution to mankind’s problem. Mankind’s problem is that he is basically evil and living in rebellion against God’s will and needs to be saved from that sinful state. Once a person receives salvation, they (if they are really serious) are preoccupied with doing the good things that please God while on this earth. This not only determines the quality of their time on earth, but also the quality of rewards they receive once they leave this earth. That’s why I’m focused on the salvation part.

[Buddha taught people how to be happy and mindful of others. Maybe the kindness the Buddha uses might give someone the strength to find Christ or at least be happy. You are forgetting that believing in CHrist isn’t enough to go to heaven.]

Believing in Christ is the only thing that can get a person into heaven. “He that believeth on the Son [Jesus Christ] hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” [John 3:36] In other words, if you don’t believe that Jesus is Lord (God), you ain’t getting into heaven. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved,” [Acts 4:12].

Whether or not a man is happy is not the heart of man’s problem. His problem is whether or not he is still living in sin by not believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. Believing in Jesus Christ is the only thing that will bring mankind true happiness. This is what gives us “joy unspeakable and full of glory,” [1 Peter 1:8]. Buddhism does not lead anyone to Christ because it is a false religion propping up a false god and “the things which the Gentiles [unbelievers] sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils,” [1 Corinthians 10:20].

  11. Trust and Believe what makes you feel good in youself.

This statement means to analyze your instincst and trust in them because you know the difference between right and wrong and yours instincts are given to you both by your intelligence and higher brain function (we have them, so I think it is implied they effect our instincts).
The point is you have to quiet your mind and your instinct will provide an answer, the right answer, and if you are a practicing Christian, I am sure you would regard it as Gods answer, and don’t say know because like myself and everyone else, I’m sure you are at least a little inclined to think you have a firm understanding of what God wants of you.

    1. [Trust and Believe what makes you feel good in youself. …This statement means to analyze your instincst and trust in them because you know the difference between right and wrong]

That’s what sinful man believes, but the word of God, which trumps man’s sinful beliefs, says “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths,” [Proverbs 3:4-6]. We cannot trust our instincts, intelligence, or mind all of the time because sometimes they’re wrong. God is always right and that’s why we should check what we think with what God desires as written in his word. Furthermore, “The heart [mind, will, and desire of a human] is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked,” [Jeremiah 17:9] and “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death,” [Proverbs 14:12].

  12. One thing I cannot ever get a satisfactory answer for is what happens to Job.
First I am not sure on this, what is the power equevalency of Satan to God? How is Satan so powerful? I thought God was basically before time and that God created everything. Was it inadvertent or was it a ying-yang thing (haha)? Then Satan either convinces God or tricks God into it, or maybe God was going to anyway, but somehow influences God the torture Job to extremities of what any one man could survive logically and maybe physically then gives everything back as to repay Job for the mental anguish caused for nothing more than the satisfaction of words.

    1. [One thing I cannot ever get a satisfactory answer for is what happens to Job.]

Maybe you’re not getting a satisfactory answer because you don’t like any answer that is in favor of the God of the Bible. You want an answer that lines up with your belief in your false doctrines.

Satan’s power comes nowhere near God’s power. God allowed Satan to attack Job to show everyone in heaven and earth that no matter what Satan does against the people of God, God will ultimately turn around Satan’s evil for that person’s good and for God’s glory. God never gave Job the reason why he allowed Satan to do what he did, he just told Job that his power, wisdom, and righteousness as God of the universe far surpassed the power, wisdom, and righteousness of any being in the universe and that’s all Job needed to understand. Then he blessed Job beyond the previous blessings he gave Job.

One lesson from Job is this–”we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose,” [Romans 8:28]. Another lesson is that when hard times and troubles fall on any believer in the Lord, God’s grace is sufficient for them: for their strength is made perfect in weakness; most gladly therefore should they glory in their infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon them [2 Corinthians 12:9].

And still another lesson learned from Job for believers in God is–”Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord,” [Romans 8:35-39]

But since you’re an unbeliever, this is probably not a satisfactory answer for you. But you know what? It’s more than good enough for me, so you can resist the truth all you want to your own detriment. I’ll keep believing in God and giving him the devotion and praise he deserves!

  13. Firstly I would like to just say that I have respect for everone’s belief in their chosen religion.

You probably dont want my life story but I’m going to write a little anyway….

I was raised as what could be described as a very devout Christian, I attended Church/Meetings 3 times a week studied the bible daily. I continued my life in this way until the age of about 16/17. Then I decided that I was not going to pursue the faith any further.

I practised no form of religion until the age of about 27. This does not mean I went off the rails, went bad or showed any other negative trait. I would like to think that those that know me and those that don’t think I’m generally a nice guy. And of course I’m not claiming to be perfect either.

Sorry, slight side track yes when I was 27 I was in Afghanistan and although I did not see death directly I was more than aware of those dying (on both sides) on a daily basis. I had always thought about Buddhism but never pursued it. I decided to read a beginners guide to Buddhism, this helped me to get through the experience and I was keen to gain an understanding of a different religion. I felt that although I don’t practise the teachings daily I felt the guidance it provide was on a par with my own moral and spiritual beliefs.

I would like to add at this point that I would consider myself neither Buddhist nor Christian.

What I have learnt about Buddhism over a short amount of time is that it is one of few if not the only religion that welcomes those of other religions. It does not condemn them as being false or condemn the followers to an afterlife of torment.

So many religions proclaim to preach “The Truth” which one is telling the truth???? To me I think this world would be a better place if religions were tolerrant of each other. How many wars have been fought in the name of religion? How many people have been tortured and killed because it is “God’s will?”

We cannot and will not be able to prove imperically how the Universe was created or how humans plants and animals came to be and we certainly don’t know what happens when we die.

To that end we should live our life following one simple rule treat those in any that you would want to be treated. If everyone could do that this world would be in a much better state 🙂

  14. [So many religions proclaim to preach “The Truth” which one is telling the truth????]

The one that has the most accurate record overall is the one that is the truth. All religions cannot be true. Buddhism contradicts other religions. Hinduism contradicts other religions. As a matter of fact, all religious writings contradict writings of other religions. Some of the writings within the same religion, like Buddhism and Hinduism, contradict other writings within the religion.

You imply you’re new to Buddhism. Well if you read more of the writings of Siddhartha Guatama, you will see he contradicts himself on several points. Since he contradicts himself, how can you know he’s telling the truth? Short answer–you can’t.

If you really take a look at the Bible and research reliable historical documents about the cultures, customs, people(s), and events mentioned in it, you will discover that the Bible is very accurate in its historical facts on all counts. It has even proven to be scientifically accurate in what it says.

I covered your questions in detail about truth and how we can know the Bible is true in my posts entitled “Can we really know the truth?” and “Is the New Testament truthful?”–a two-part post.

[We cannot and will not be able to prove imperically how the Universe was created]

Actually, science has already given solid proof that the Bible’s version of the creation of the universe is the most accurate. Even Nobel prize-winning scientists have already come to this conclusion. I did a three-part series of posts entitled “proof of God’s existence in the cosmos” going into detail about the scientific research on this if you care to read them.

But even with the proof I present in those posts that answer your questions, if you don’t have faith and are not willing to accept the historical and scientific records that God has established, the truth will profit you nothing spiritually. You will just continue down the path you’re on and disregard the truth.

I, just like Jesus, respect any person’s right to make their own choices about their religion. But just like Jesus, I am free to point out how wrong you are for not believing in the Bible as the only spiritual truth in existence. Jesus associated with prostitutes, adulterers, embezzlers (i.e. tax collectors who overcharged), and people who held onto false religious beliefs and told the truth to them about their sin in love without seeking to take their lives if they didn’t accept him.

Just because people have misrepresented the true Jesus and the true God doesn’t mean we can just toss out the truth he and his prophets or apostles speak in the Bible.

You said Buddhism is “the only religion that welcomes those of other religions. It does not condemn them as being false or condemn the followers to an afterlife of torment.” But this statement of yours is criticizing the belief that there is a hell, and you are therefore really rejecting as false those who believe this. So really you have just contradicted yourself.

You also said Buddhism “was on a par with my own moral and spiritual beliefs” and therein lies the problem with all humankind. We want a god and a belief system based on our own morals and spiritual beliefs. This is idolatry–creating a god in our own image. The God of the Bible is the only God who expects us to chuck our own beliefs and morals to be spiritually created in his image to live by his morals which are higher than ours.

Your beliefs may seem right to you, however “there is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death,” [Proverbs 16:25]. And “[e]very way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts,” [Proverbs 21:2] so if you haven’t received Jesus as your Lord your heart is not right in God’s eyes.

    1. That’s just your unfounded opinion, Mark. All Buddhists don’t even have one united view. Nor do all Muslims. Nor do all Hindus. So your argument falls rather flat. In the end, the only thing that matters is what the Bible says and by Bible I mean the KJV. Confusion only comes into the picture when men exalt their intellect above what God says in his word and become unwilling to accept what God says and means. That’s why humans created so many false religions like the one you follow.

You talk about a “simple look at history” and “studying the origins” of Christianity for its true intent, but it’s clear by your comment you haven’t really studied its true history yourself. My guess is you’re going by what some “scholar” said and you just took them at their word because they have a bunch of letters like “Ph.D.” after their name(s). This is rather obvious by the generalizations you’ve made without any specific examples because you either don’t really have concrete examples or the examples you do have wouldn’t stand up under scrutiny. So next time before you criticize, make sure you do your research.

In this post, I have given specific examples and even include the source where you can do your own research to verify what I say.

  16. I am a Buddhist. Thz u for letting me know the difference between Christian and my religion.
All I want to say is that u misunderstand Nirvana,
Nirvana is not a place of Gods (or something like that.) I don’t know how to explain u about Nirvana as I am not very good at English.
To be said simply, Nirvana is a place of “PEACE” which one have escaped from “suffering” of life(including heaven).

    1. There is no peace apart from the Lord Jesus Christ. You’ve allowed Satan to deceive you into thinking that Buddhist teaching is truthful when it is full of deceit. Turn away from your sins and turn to the Lord Jesus Christ and you will find the peace that surpasses all understanding and that surpasses the false peace of Buddhism.

    1. Christians respect others by not forcing the truth on them. Telling someone about their sins and telling them they need Jesus Christ to save them from their sins is not forcing religion on others. It’s exercising freedom of speech. We don’t put guns to people’s heads and tell them submit or die. That’s another religion that does that. The Bible happens to be true in every way spiritually, historically, and scientifically and stands up to any type of scrutiny. My prayer is that the truth you’ve read here will permeate your heart and that you will come to know true freedom that comes from being totally cleansed from your sins to be made free with Jesus as your Lord.

isn’t this a way of trying to say that “don’t believe in other religions” it’s like you’re forcing people to believe in christianity?

[The Bible happens to be true in every way spiritually, historically, and scientifically and stands up to any type of scrutiny.]

are you sure about that? man wrote the bible not “God” how would you be so sure that everything in the bible is true? it could be written by corrupt priests…and is there any proof that these stories are real? up to now i have never heard of a man who can “split” the sea and walk pass it.

Scientific inquiry into the origins of Christianity begins to-day with the question: “Did Jesus Christ really live?” Was there a man named Jesus, who was called the Christ, living in Palestine nineteen centuries ago?? then where is the proof my friend

    1. Telling people not to believe in other religions isn’t forcing people to believe in Christianity. Your concept of “forcing people” is skewed. Speaking to someone about your beliefs isn’t “forcing.” “Forcing” is when you say, “If you don’t believe what I’m saying, I’m going to make you pay for it by doing this or that to make things hard for you.” This is how Islam, Hinduism, & the gay rights movement works, but not Christianity.

Just because a man does something doesn’t automatically make it corrupt. After all, you believe hook, line, and sinker in what the Buddha taught and he was a mere mortal whose gravesite can be visited today. So why not follow your own argument & answer your own questions about his teachings. They don’t stand up to scrutiny. The Bible does. You haven’t updated your research if you believe the Red Sea can’t be split for people to walk through. A man named Dr. Carl Drews has proven that a strong wind can, in fact, split the Red Sea & his research has been peer reviewed & verified.

The proof you seek for Christ’s actual existence has been around for centuries. The 1st & 2nd century writings of people like Josephus, Tacitus, Suetonius, Julius Africanus, Thallus, Pliny the Younger, Lucian of Samosata, Mara Bar-Serapion, and Celsus all verify Christ’s existence. There’s your proof.

      1. but you are forgetting even though they are Islam, Hinduism, & the gay rights movement they are still human and they have the right to believe in what they believe, of course you don’t want other people “bad-mouthing” your religion i suggest why not do the same thing because you said
[“If you don’t believe what I’m saying, I’m going to make you pay for it by doing this or that to make things hard for you.” This is how Islam, Hinduism, & the gay rights movement works, but not Christianity.]
it proves that you are clearly destroying the “reputation” of other religions

and by the way what if there proofs that Christ have in fact existed are wrong? i mean how could these myths survive from 1st century until now 2011? don’t you believe that there might be possibilities that these are only made up?

      2. It’s one thing to “bad-mouth” a religion & quite another to attack a person’s life, livelihood, or property if they don’t agree with your viewpoint. I have no problem with freedom of speech. I do have a problem with trying to physically hurt someone for disagreeing with your opinions.

If a religion is based on lies, those lies should be exposed. But Christianity is based on truth. I gave you historical & scientific proof. You claimed to be into science and now you want to use your unfounded conjecture and speculation to ask me about Christ’s existence & what the Bible says. Since I’ve given scientific proof, where is your scientific proof for your speculations?

I told you the evidence I presented has already been verified. Here’s how scientific verification works–a scientist makes a discovery and examines it. He/She draws conclusions about the discovery then calls in colleagues to peer review the discovery. The colleagues analyze the discovery thoroughly and draw conclusions about whether the discovery is valid or invalid. When it comes to information that deals with the Bible, it gets a lot more scrutiny than a discovery that props up Darwinian evolution. Too many scholars have verified the facts I mentioned and for you to speculate they’re made up just shows me you haven’t done your own research. You’re not really interested in science, you’re only interested in your unfounded conjecture because you don’t want to change your sinful ways so to make yourself feel comfortable in your sin you have to draw your misleading conclusions.

  19. Whether Christ did, or did not live, has nothing at all to do with what the churches teach, or with what we believe, It is wholly a matter of evidence. It is a question of science. The question is–what does history say? And that question must be settled in the court of historical criticism. If the thinking world is to hold to the position that Christ was a real character, there must be sufficient evidence to warrant that belief. If no evidence for his existence can be found; if history returns the verdict that his name is not inscribed upon her scroll, if it be found that his story was created by art and ingenuity, like the stories of fictitious heroes, he will have to take his place with the host of other demigods whose fancied lives and deeds make up the mythology of the world.

    1. [Whether Christ did, or did not live, has nothing at all to do with what the churches teach, or with what we believe, It is wholly a matter of evidence]

Yes, but that’s only part of it. Whenever God tells us something, he always gives proof to back it up. In my previous reply I told you the verified historical writings of unbelievers like Josephus, Tacitus, Suetonius, Julius Africanus, Thallus, Pliny the Younger, Lucian of Samosata, Mara Bar-Serapion, and Celsus all verify Christ’s existence. The fact that Christ existed and that his existence is historical fact shows that Christians don’t have blind faith. It’s about believing what God said and what Jesus said because they proved what they said was really true.

I can give all the hardcore proof that the Bible is 100% reliable & you won’t believe the evidence if you don’t have faith in God. But since our God is God over all, that makes him the God over history, science, & true spirituality. So here’s some proof for you–

Job 26:7 says the earth hangs on nothing. The book of Job is the oldest book in the Bible, pre-dating Genesis. Then centuries later, gravity was discovered to prove the Earth really hangs on nothing.

Jeremiah 33:22 says the stars and the sand of the sea cannot be numbered and scientists have proven this is true when they have to periodically increase their guesstimates about how many stars or sand grains exist as technology advances.

2 Samuel 22:16, written in the 900s B.C, says there are channels (valleys) in the sea. When sonar & other technologies were invented, it was discovered the ocean floor has mountain ranges at depths that man cannot even go. So how did someone in ancient times know this?

Isaiah 40:22 says God stretches the heavens out like a curtain and a tent. In the early 1900s, Edwin Hubble discovered with his powerful telescope that the universe is expanding just like the Bible said centuries earlier. And the oldest known manuscript of Isaiah dates back to the 100s BCE.

Psalm 8:8 says there are paths in the seas. In the 19th century, Matthew Fontaine Maury was inspired by this text and went searching for those paths, discovering that there were ocean currents. He mapped them out & revolutionized ocean travel.

Genesis 1 says the Earth had a beginning & the universe began from nothing. Centuries later, the 2nd law of thermodynamics was discovered which showed matter in the universe is running out and is finite. And centuries later, with the discovery of the expanding universe, Einstein came up with his theory of general relativity stating that time and all matter in the universe began from nothing, just like the Bible says.

Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy tell how God told the Israelites to kill the Canaanites for their abominable sins. People have argued this was a slaughter of innocent people, but ancient clay tablets were discovered in Ras Shamra, Syria that recorded the history of the Canaanites. The clay tablets dated back to when their civilization existed & they wrote about how they sacrificed their children by burning them alive, how they took part in homosexual behavior, how they were adulterous, how they murdered each other to resolve disputes, how they had sex with young children, and how they committed bestiality. So what God said in the Bible was true and this proves the Bible records eyewitness accounts of what happened in those days.

All of this is just the tip of the iceberg of the science proving the Bible is true. But this won’t do you any good unless you turn from your sins (which started with the first man Adam) and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ who died for your sins and is the only one who can save you from your sins.

      1. Based on science, how exactly would one turn from his sins and believe in this God and Jesus Christ if he can’t see or in fact there are no hard evidence that this person existed?

Personally i believe that all religions are the same all the Gods are the same When we look at the world today, it doesn’t take long to see that there is religious turmoil all around us. It is within this environment that most of us long for a time when there will be peace and righteousness. Yet sometimes people who are seeking this peace will unfortunately sacrifice truth. Take for example the three largest monotheistic religions of the world: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Although there are many religions that believe in polytheism (many gods), these three religions, which espouse monotheism, (belief in one god) have almost 3 billion followers. It has been common and may I say politically correct over recent years to proclaim that these three religions worship the same “one” God, but just have different names. For the Jewish and Christian religion, God is called “Yahweh” or “Jehovah” whereas the name of this God in Islam is “Allah.” What does the Bible say to this? Do we all worship the same God, but just have different names for Him? And if He is the same God, does He accept all these various forms of worship as sincere attempts on our part to please Him?

      2. Please spare me your pretended interest in how science can tell someone to turn from their sins. You’ve already shown you’re really not interested in science. You’ve shown your cards & it’s a bad hand.

You say you believe all gods are the same. Why not follow your own advice & present some scientific proof of that?

I’ve given you scientific & historical facts you can look up yourself about the Bible that proves its true. But you continue to give conjecture & speculation instead of the scientific proof you falsely claim is important to you. The Bible is also proven true by the large numbers of prophecies it predicted that have been fulfilled.

How can Buddhism have the correct god if what he says can easily be proven wrong? For example, in chapter 12 of the gospel of Buddha, he says self is defined as “yearning for pleasure and lust after vanity.” Then he contradicts himself in the same chapter by saying “The existence of self is an illusion…” An illusion is something that seems to be real but isn’t. If that’s the case “self” doesn’t exist. If “self” doesn’t exist, then the yearning for pleasure and lust for vanity doesn’t exist because that’s what “self” is, based on what Buddha said. But we see the yearning for pleasure and lust for vanity every day on the television and hear about it in the news. Isn’t that why nations go to war? Isn’t that why so many people waste their time watching porn on the internet? He contradicts himself.

All religions do not worship the same God. All of them contradict each other. The writers of Hindu scripture contradict themselves. So did Muhammad in the Koran and in the Hadiths. So does Buddha. If a religion has contradictions in it, how can the follower of that religion ever know the truth since they say one thing one minute and tear down what they said the next? The Bible is the only religious book that does not contradict itself and is 100% reliable in its historical record, in its predictions that have come true, in its science, and in the lives it has genuinely changed from evil to good. There’s your evidence. Only a fool would choose not to believe what God has made obvious.

      3. Here is another contradiction found in the Gospel of Buddha. In chapter 4 where it talks about his birth, it is said many miracles were done because he was born. But in the chapter titled “Miracles Forbidden,” the Buddha told his disciples that the law of karma governed all things, therefore “He who attempts to perform miracles has not understood the doctrine of the Tathagata [the Buddha].” If miracles were against his teachings, why were they done at his birth as a matter of rejoicing and why does the Buddha have a reputation among his followers of performing miracles? Contradictions, contradictions.

THERE IS NO GOD – for goodness sake, buddhism DOES NOT have a CORRECT GOD
STOP PRETENDING TO KNOW BUDDHISM, you obviously have not even gone to a temple and talked to a monk or read all the sutras. There is NO GOSPEL OF BUDDHA, Paul Carus’ Buddha the Gospel – is NOT A REAL SUTRA, and those words are taken very loosely.

“For example, in chapter 12 of the gospel of Buddha, he says self is defined as “yearning for pleasure and lust after vanity.” – The Buddha NEVER SAID THAT – that sounds like a Christian idea, about Original Sin, and Buddhists do not have Original Sin.

And no he does not contradict himself. That is very correct, if you yourself does not exist how can vanity or lust exist? Vanity, Lust, these are all concepts – say you see a provocative woman on television in a bathing suit all groomed up – maybe you see vanity and lust, but another person doesn’t see it that way, a child doesn’t, I may not – that is your viewpoint, your opinion, your existence that is seeing this vanity and lust, but if you don’t exist, how can you experience this, have this opinion or viewpoint? Everything in its existence is truth – “I think, therefore I am” – Descartes. This is exactly what buddhism is about – I think, I exist. I don’t exist then I don’t think – no mind for concepts

Buddhism is a self learning philosophy more than religion

How can anyone believe in anything so blindly? At least in Buddhism it says that you have every right to doubt the Buddha and the Buddha said to never trust anyone or anything until you have learned the truth about the universe yourself.

and DIDN’T the BIBLE/GOD make up LIES about the Garden of Eden and says NOTHING about Evolution, and pretty much sums it up to Evolution never happening. Not to mention Noah’s Ark? Hello, does anyone think there was a Giant that really fought David? H#$! no.

There was a BBC Documentary that said that the Three Magi who came for Jesus actually were from Tibet and they were 3 Tibetan Monks who took him to study Buddhism. In fact, a lot of the teachings from Jesus Christ is very similar to Buddhism, which had been around for 500 prior to Jesus Christ. There are historical texts that say that a man named Issa from Israel stayed at the Tibetan Monastary and that Jesus from the ages of 14-30 stayed there. In the Bible it never discusses where Jesus went for all those years.
Just look it up, its on Youtube.

Do Buddhists care about this? No why should they, who the h#%^ cares? It’s just religion, its not truth and truth cannot be taken for granted, because it will always be passed out from someone else’s mouth, just like the Bible – you want truth – find it out for yourself, like the buddha said.

The Buddha was an Indian Prince who left his home after seeing death and sickness, and he wanted to understand the true meaning of life – he wanted to understand where we come from and why we die, so he spend several years studying under the best teachers in India and finally spent years meditating and finding the truth for himself. – That is all he wanted for people to find out the truth for yourself, and if you don’t want to become a monk thats okay, lots of people meditate everyday to reflect on their hectic, crazy lives and understand a little bit more about themselves.

    1. @lake,

Your comments are typical of those who cling to false ideas. You lie several times to try to dupe people into thinking that you are telling the truth. You claim to know about Buddhism when you don’t & attack me because I have exposed the lies. Paul Carus’ Gospel of the Buddha has been accepted throughout the Buddhist world for its accuracy, including in Japan & China, and is one of the publications used to spread Buddhism in the Western hemisphere. So your attempts to try to knock it as inaccurate are completely false. Your claims that “Buddha never said that” when you tried to tear down Paul Carus’ translation are an outright lie. The fact that you are a liar is proof that you are evil and are therefore sinful. The fact that the Buddha contradicted himself in his writings prove he had original sin.

Therefore, if anyone is believing in anything so blindly, it’s you. The fact that you attack the Bible as being inaccurate also reveals your ignorance. The fact that there was a worldwide flood as the Bible states in the story of Noah has been scientifically shown to be accurate in the fossil record and in the geological record. Natural selection has also been proven to be inaccurate as I’ve pointed out several times here on my blog when I’ve discussed how dinosaurs didn’t become birds and how Darwinists make assumptions about “human ancestors” when they find certain fossils only to have their data debunked when their discoveries are scrutinized. So it’s no surprise a liar such as you would defend other liars like evolutionists in a failed attempt to try to tear down the Bible. Furthermore, Bible prophecies have been fulfilled many times, proving that it is true.

The fact you don’t believe in giants also highlights how uneducated you are. P.T. Barnum used giants in his sideshows. Giants have also been featured at one time or another in the Guinness Book of World Records and Ripley’s Believe It or Not. And if you believe everything the BBC tells you, it just shows how gullible you are. Media outlets like the BBC have an agenda and their agenda is easily advanced when people such as yourself check your brains at your remote control and just accept what the boob tube tells you without question.

Buddhism may have been here before Jesus was born from Mary, but the early books of the Bible pre-date Buddha’s lies. There were Jews in India at the time Buddha came on the scene. Hebrews traded with many nations, including India. Wherever Hebrews went, they carried parts of the Bible with them. And it was common for Buddha and gurus and Brahmins in India to plagiarize from the texts of other religious groups like Hebrews when they encountered words that sounded good to them. The Mari tablets and the Amarna tablets speak of the Hebrews & their practices. They date back to the 17th & 18th centuries BC. That pre-dates Buddha many centuries. Jesus Christ’s teachings were a continuation of what the ancient Hebrews were taught and he is the God who pre-dates the universe.

It’s funny that you speak of “historical texts” but mention no specifics as I’ve done. The Magi in the Bible worshiped Jesus as Lord which means they forsook their paganism. Jesus did not convert to their religion. Just because his early years aren’t in the Bible doesn’t mean it’s okay for people to buy into whatever lies are conjured up in “ancient” texts that speculate what he might have been doing, so your arguments are baseless and worthless.

One second you’re saying the Bible isn’t truth and the next you’re saying everyone must figure out their own truth. Your words are contradictory. If everyone must figure out their own truth, then how do you know what you believe is true? Truth is not relative, as you imply. It is objective. When people get their facts wrong, as you have, it ceases to be the truth. If you go to the store and your total comes to $50, but you tell the store clerk that you figure that the true total is only $20, do you actually think the clerk will let you out of the store when you only give him $20? If a cop clocks you doing 55 mph in a 30 mph zone and he pulls you over, do you actually think he’s going to let you get off by telling him that what’s true for him is not true for you? That’s foolishness.

  21. Harry, I don’t know how far removed you are from the study of Buddhism, but I recently challenged my friend to critique Buddhism and Jainism as critically as he does Christianity. I am also attempting to do due diligence to make sure he isn’t slacking. Would you be able to recommend any resources?

As an aside, don’t you ever tire of responding to these people? I know of no one converted via debate. I am trying to reach my friend intellectually, as that is how we relate best, but despair that he will fall back on something like, ‘the Bible does not condemn slavery and is therefore ethically bankrupt.’ During our last talk, he resorted to sarcastic superlatives such as finding ‘two million’ flaws with the Bible (of which he named 9 and I provided simple references and refutations to each.) Haha, I guess this enormous aside is just me seeking sympathy.

To the other posters: Don’t you ever tire of your post-modern relativism? If someone says 1+1 = 2, and someone else says it equals three, they cannot both be right. Are you to respect both ‘truths’? Why is the convincing of another of the error of their ways always judged to be an attack? Secondly, do not condemn Christianity due to the shortcomings of its imperfect followers. Cheers.

[ I know of no one converted via debate.]

Debates & arguments allow a person to present their evidence and opinions and serve well to convert people to a new view. That’s why attorneys present their arguments in courtrooms every day. And the Bible presents plenty of examples where Christians argue & debate their points–from Jesus in the gospels to the apostles in Acts.

      1. Harry, thanks for the reply. It looks like Dr. Ron Rhodes book covers a specific sect of Buddhism. I’m looking for something more specific, probably directly analyzing the Pali Canon. This might not even be necessary, as I’m reading that different sects basically contradict each other. If an equation that means anything is meaningless, so too a religion, no?

Oh, I don’t question the merits of debate, just the fruit seems so few and far between. Maybe that’s more a statement about the branch, eh? =/

        Thanks again!
